Corneal Genetics Laboratory
The Corneal Genetics Laboratory is a major component of the Jules Stein Eye Institute and the Department of Ophthalmology, dedicated to discovering the genetic basis and developing new models of genetic therapy for a large number of potentially blinding inherited corneal disorders.  The goals of the Corneal Genetics Laboratory are:

  • To perform genetic testing of patients with known or suspected corneal dystrophies to confirm or refute the diagnosis. Since the Corneal Genetics Laboratory is a research laboratory, when the results of genetic testing will be used for clinical decision-making, they will be validated in the UCLA Orphan Disease Testing Center, which is a government-certified diagnostic laboratory.
  • To identify new mutations responsible for causing loss of corneal clarity in a wide variety of corneal dystrophies.
  • To identify and describe novel corneal dystrophies, and to search for the underlying genetic basis.
  • To identify the genetic basis of previously described corneal dystrophies and degenerations.
  • To develop methods of genetic therapy for the treatment of the corneal dystrophies, using the information obtained in our laboratory regarding the defective gene and protein, the gene product.

Gifts to further the work of the UCLA Corneal Genetics Laboratory can be mailed to the Development Office at the Jules Stein Eye Institute.
